02 · Generations

Ten model years, one silhouette

The body barely changed from 1999 to 2009. Underneath, the S2000 went from a 9,000-rpm screamer to a torquier 2.2-litre car, then picked up drive-by-wire and stability control.

AP1 MY2000–2003

The 9,000-rpm original

  • F20C 2.0 L: 240 hp at 8,300 rpm and 153 lb-ft at 7,500, with a 9,000 rpm redline.

Stroked for torque

  • F22C1 2.2 L in North America: 240 hp at 7,800 rpm, 162 lb-ft at 6,500, 8,000 rpm redline. Europe and Asia kept the F20C.

  • ³ s2000.club lists the AP1 rear tyre's load index as both 89W and 92W.
  • ⁴ Honda's AP1 launch material says 50/50. The spec sheet says 49/51.
04 · Gearing

Six gears to redline

Full-throttle shifts at redline, calculated from each car's ratios and stock rear tyre. Hover or drag across the chart to read rpm in every gear at any speed.

Engine speed vs road speed

Theoretical: assumes no wheelspin or tyre growth. In 6th, aerodynamic drag caps the car long before redline. Overall ratio = gear × primary reduction × 4.10 final drive.

05 · By the numbers

How many, and in what

Sales peaked in 2002 and fell off sharply in the car's final years. Registry counts were compiled by an owner from Honda OwnerLink data and are unofficial.

Share of the 66,860 registry cars

Yellow/Black was the CR's interior, so its 699 matches the CR count. Red and Red/Black follow Honda OwnerLink's naming, and which years used which is still unclear.

06 · Paint

Twenty-one factory colors

Codes ending in P are pearl, codes ending in M are metallic, and codes with no suffix are solid. The black bumper details are NH-533 on every car. Pick a year to see what Honda offered in any market. Swatches are screen approximations.
